Partial pension

General information

The partial pension option has been available since 1 January 2026. It aims to make it more attractive for older people to remain in work. Thanks to the partial pension, these workers can:

  • work fewer hours while remaining in their job;
  • have a flexible transition to retirement; and
  • have financial security provided by part of the pension.

A partial pension is ideal for anyone who finds full-time work too much but would still like to remain in work. The amount of the partial pension depends on a number of factors.

Affected

Further information

Amount of the pension

If you take early retirement, the applicable deductions for your pension type will be made (more information can be found under ‘pension amount' on the 'pension types' page. The early starter bonus will be taken into account. However, certain payments – such as the compensatory supplement and the child supplement – are not included in the partial pension, as your pension account has not yet been closed.

The amount of your partial pension depends on the extent of the reduction in working hours and the total amount credited to your pension account in the previous year. The amounts are as follows:

  • for a reduction in working hours of between 25 percent and 40 percent: 25 percent of the total amount credited.
  • for a reduction in working hours of more than 40 percent but no more than 60 percent: 50 percent of the total amount credited.
  • for a reduction in working hours of more than 60 percent but no more than 75 percent: 75 percent of the total amount credited. In other words, even if your working hours are reduced by only 60.01 percent, you receive 75 percent of your total credit in the form of a partial pension.

Pension account

On the start date of your partial pension, your pension account is ‘closed’ for the portion taken into account (25 percent, 50 percent or 75 percent). The partial pension is calculated on the basis of this percentage.

The remaining part of your pension account remains in place and continues to grow according to your employment income.

Pension start date

When you definitively retire:

  • your pension will be paid in full from the date of your retirement, and the pension account will be completely closed; and
  • the usual rules on deductions and supplements apply.

If you continues to work beyond the standard retirement age, you will receive the corresponding supplements.
